On 18 June 2023, the people of Geneva will be asked to vote on whether to enshrine the right to food in the Canton’s Constitution. The Fondation Partage, the CAPAS, Caritas, the Colis du Cœur and the Centre Social Protestant are joining forces to call on the population to vote YES.
Successive crises have had a major impact on the population over the last few years. The Geneva Food Bank is seeing an almost constant increase in the number of final beneficiaries of this aid. More than 14,000 people a week are now supported by the Foundation’s food distributions through some fifty social institutions.
From an emergency, this food aid has become structural, demonstrating the need to organise a real public policy in this area. This is why, like housing, health and education, it has become essential to enshrine the right to food in the Geneva Constitution so that implementing legislation can be drafted to help improve the support system for vulnerable people in a sustainable way.
The aim is to enable organisations working in the field of social assistance to respond to the challenges and complications of growing insecurity by not only responding to specific emergencies (which they will continue to do), but also by coordinating with the authorities so that the fundamental right to adequate food can become a tangible reality for everyone in need.
This is why the Fondation Partage is calling for a YES vote on 18 June.
